A Russian helicopter was shot down in Syria early Monday morning, killing 5 on board. The Mi-8 transporter was shot down by rebels according to Russian sources. The plane was reportedly on its way to deliver much needed humanitarian aid to Aleppo.
“From what we know from information provided by the Defense Ministry, all those who were on the helicopter died,” Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists.
This is reportedly Syria’s largest loss of life since it launched its pro-Assad offensive in Syria in the waning months of 2015.
Bashar Al-Assad’s forces have been trying to hold off rebel forces from sieging the city of Aleppo. The aid being delivered by the Russian Mi-8 transporter was reportedly sent to Rebel forces who were surrendering.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
