Olympic basketball player and Chicago Sky WNBA star Elena Delle Donne has come out and identifies publicly as a lesbian for the first time. In a recent profile in Vogue magazine, Delle Donne identified her fiancé Amanda Clifton, making her one of the first openly gay WNBA stars and definitely the most high profile.
“I’ve grown up in a family where I have the most unique sister in the world and we’ve always been taught to celebrate uniqueness,” Delle Donne said Wednesday in Rio. “It was easy for me to be who I am and hopefully others can be who they are as well.”
Delle Donne has been in Rio de Janeiro preparing for the upcoming Olympics and looks to continue her dominance on the world stage.
Delle Donne is one of the best players in the league, averaging 20.4 per game in her four seasons. In 2013 she was the second player selected in the draft behind Britney Griner, who also identifies as lesbian. Donne won the WNBA’s MVP award last season, and will attempt to utilize those skills to bring home the gold this August.
